Crime Prevention - Neighborhood Watch Anyone?

The Orange County Sheriff's Office has a program of which any community in Orange County can take advantage. It's all about Crime Prevention. You can request a FREE Residential Security Survey to be done on your condo. The officer in charge of our area (Sector 2) can be contacted to schedule a survey. His info is: DFC Richard Negron 407.249.4508.
See Orange County's Crime Prevention Team for more information.

This brings up the idea of a Neighborhood Watch. In order to become an "official" neighborhood watch community we would need to know if people are interested. For instance, the program calls for Volunteers to serve as block captains. One block captain needs to be assigned for every ten homes (or in our case perhaps a building or two). The block captain’s duties are varied but essential to the success of a Neighborhood Watch. These tasks include welcoming new neighbors and encouraging their participation in the program; compiling a list of names of all persons on their block who wish to participate; serving as a liaison between citizens and law enforcement; and helping to form and maintain a telephone notification system for emergencies.

So, what do you think? Any interest? Please fell free to comment and or vote on the Neighborhood Watch Poll to the right. If you would like to volunteer to be a block captain, please file out the form indicating your interest.

I appreciate your enthusiasm. Having a neighborhood watch is probably the best thing we can do to help each other as neighbors. The gate is being repaired. The electronic panel was damaged by lightening. As a Board we decided to have it repaired rather than replaced because it was much more cost effective. Unfortunately, this meant the gate would be inoperable longer. We are also looking into options to prevent people from pushing through the gate with their cars. If you see people misusing the gate, please make note of the type/color of vehicle & get license plate number if you can. Report this information to us. The best defense is to have many eyes keeping watch.

Please remember that the board is made up of condo owners. They spend a lot of time trying to manage things with no pay and they all have full time jobs and personal responsibilities as well. Right now a big part of the time they spend on board activities is spent tracking down people who aren't paying their dues. We are ALL part of this community. If you are unhappy with what is happening it is all of our responsibilities to get involved. This is not an apartment complex where people are paid full time wages to manage this property. Right now with so many people not paying their Condo association dues, if you want things to look better and if you want cameras, we will either have to pay extra in assessments to pay for these things, or band together to get through this time until this housing situation works it self out. It is easy to blame someone else for things that we don't like, but in reality, it is all of our responsibilities to work together. The meeting on Wednesday will be a time that we can do that. We can either waste our time complaining or spend our time constructively by organizing a Neighborhood Watch Program. I personally would like to see the later happen.
